Burn’s Night Traditions

Lots of people in Scotland (and elsewhere in the world) celebrate Burn’s Night on 25th January every year. As a child, my Granny Heron used to tell stories to us about how her Father was curator of Burn’s cottage.  How many people can say that? My Great Grandfather was curator of Burn’s Cottage in Dumfries from 1945 – 1961. Tom McCrorie compiled Burn’s family tree whilst he held this position. Quite something really.  Did you know that Auld Lang Syne (sung all over the world), is actually a poem/song by Burns!

So back to Burn’s Night. We celebrate by having Haggis, Neeps & Tatties and if we were at a dinner we’d hear an ‘ode to a haggis’ that is what you do to address the food.

Tonight we started with Scottish mussels cooked in a garlic butter sauce. They are Scottish rope grown mussels and we learned about how good these pre-cooked ones were from Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group as we are one of the Fish Fanatics blogging for Fish is the Dish. They were £2.79 from Morrisons and fed two of us for a starter and was really yummy.

We’d normally wash this down with a dram, and if I wasn’t pregnant, tonight’s would have been a bruichladdich toasting to Maureen and her husband, Mark Reynier.

Slàinte!
